How we research and write our questions
Last updated .
Sources we use
We only use official sources for facts about a test or a rule:
- the council's own web pages, licensing policy, licence conditions and applicant guidance;
- the organisation that runs the council's test or course, where the council names one;
- UK legislation on legislation.gov.uk;
- official national sources such as Department for Transport statistics.
We do not use other training websites, forums or apps as sources. If a council does not publish a detail, such as a time limit, we say it is not published rather than guess.
How we write questions
Every question is written by us from a specific part of an official document, and records that document and section. We never use real, leaked or remembered test questions, and we do not copy councils' own sample questions. Each question has four options, one correct answer and a short explanation in plain English.
Before a question goes live it is checked against its source and approved by a reviewer. Our system blocks questions that are missing a source, have duplicate wording or have not been approved.
What "last checked" means
It is the date we last compared the page with the official sources it cites. It does not mean the council has approved our page. Councils can change their rules at any time, so always confirm important details, such as fees and booking, with the council.
Practice scores and readiness
Practice tests follow the published format where the council publishes it. Where it does not, we say so. Practice scores and readiness estimates are our own learning tools. They are not official results and cannot guarantee that you will pass.
Translations
Where we offer translated help in future, the English question will always be shown first, translations will be labelled as learning support, and they will never be presented as official test translations.
Corrections
If you think something is wrong, email support@elsglobal.co.uk with the page or question ID and the source. We check each report. If we find an error, we correct or withdraw the content and update the page's modified date.
